People often use the terms cybersecurity and information security interchangeably. But is there a real difference? Let's dive in and find out to see what they mean and what they do.
What is Information Security?
Information security can also be called data security. So, let us first understand the difference between data and information. Anything stored in your computer can be considered data regardless of their level of importance. Information, however, is data that carries some form of meaning. This could include your personal information, confidentiality agreements, contracts among other things. Before the internet, all information was kept in secure file cabinets or safes, which is still the case sometimes. Information security is the online safe that protects information from unauthorized access.
What is Cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity just like information security provides protection but to all data. It's not like an online safe but a anti-theft mechanism that protects all data from outside sources. It protects servers, computer systems, intranets etc. from cyber attackers who wish to use this information for ransom. This has been an increasing problem over the years which is why every company needs cybersecurity. This is why it is important to learn how to protect yourself from these cyber threats.
Similarities and Differences
Information security and cybersecurity are both designed to protect data but that is where their similarities end. Information security is responsible for protecting data in all forms whether its physical or digital. Cybersecurity only works with protecting data on the internet. It also prevents cyber crimes, online frauds and external corruption. Information security prevents unauthorized access and disruption to keep information secure. So, if your business is reliant on the internet then you should understand both these terms and implement required measures to keep all your data safe. Even for businesses who are not cyber related, they should at least treat information security as a necessity.
