5 Lifechanging Tips for Young Entrepreneurs

The past year has been a difficult time for business, but with the country slowly beginning to open up again, a lot of youth are seeing opportunity in a soon-to-be bustling Canada. Though they may be armed with plans made during the extended down-time, there may still be some hesitation in taking the plunge.

1. Network.

Networking is one of the best ways to get yourself out there. It gives you a chance to pitch your ideas to others in minutes and get opinions on your business from experts. You might get intimidated but focus on the knowledge you can get from picking their brains a little. This is also a great time to scope out competition and see what they're doing well and not-so-well.

2. Control your scope.

When starting out your business, there may be many ideas you want to try out. Each one could all lead to success, widening your scope by choosing all of them may lead to a lack of funds to accomplish it all. The saying "don't put your eggs in one basket" applies, but the same can be true for going in the entire other direction – dreaming too big might make your plans completely unachievable in practice.

The key is to take risks, plan big, but make sure that you have the money, manpower, and character to back it up. Controlling your scope maintains clear focus on the goal, and with an easily understood goal it becomes much easier to meet it.

3. Research your customers.

You have this amazing idea that you think is going to take off, but maybe you don't actually have the research to back it up. How then would you be able to know this project would work?

Even if your business is booming, talking to your customers and getting feedback is extremely important. Companies generate solutions for their clients, and if that company isn't solving those problems, then that company may need to adapt or else it may not be successful in the long term. Both researching the customer base and talking to your customers directly are excellent ways in fine-tuning your product or service to be the best it can be. This way your product or service stays relevant, and your company stays on top of innovation.

4. Create a professional atmosphere.

Looking the part is half the battle when starting a business. While the environment of business today has become more relaxed, professional attire is still important when dealing with the clients that trust you to deliver. A professionally built website will attract new clients, and a professional demeanour will keep old clients returning.

Professionalism is more than just the clothes you wear and the website you create, though. Professionalism also means the delivery of a product or service on time, a cordial and friendly demeanor, and a constant drive for perfection in the products that go out to your clients. Passion and professionalism go hand in hand, and your customers will notice if you are working to be the best you can be.

5. Stay on top of your productivity.

While a new business may seem small and manageable at first, the more successful it becomes, the more difficult it may be to juggle all the moving parts. Success can become the very thing you're afraid of, and that can lead to the serious hindrance of your business.

Getting yourself management software that you know is reliable and that the customer can trust is therefore key to success. Enterprise Resource Planning software (ERP) isn't just optimal for the streamlining of your work, though. It's also an excellent security measure for peace of mind. Getting yourself software that your consumers know, and trust is a big step towards developing loyal, returning clients.
